Mexico's Airports: Ordaz International

Article Directory :: Travel & Leisure Articles

Licenciado Gustavo Diaz Ordaz International Airport is located in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico and is the eighth busiest in the country. In 2011 the facility served 2.5 million passengers. Of course, being located in the popular vacation spot of Puerto Vallarta, most of those passengers were arriving for their own visit to Mexico. Ordaz International is primarily a passenger airport, as cargo is facilitated through other smaller airports in outlying areas.

There are about 22 major airports in Mexico, the busiest of which is Mexico City International Airport and Cancun International Airport. Combined, those two facilities serve approximately 40 million passengers each year. Ordaz may seem tiny in comparison, but for a small community like Puerto Vallarta, the airport is just about right. Any larger and the resort town may lose its relaxing charm!

This facility is named after the 49th President of Mexico, Gustavo Diaz Ordaz Bolanos. He reigned for six years, and is well known even in international circles for his strict rule over the cabinet and the nation as a whole. Ordaz had no tolerance for civil protest, which became evident on an international scale through the Tlatelolco massacre in which many unarmed protesting students were killed at the hand of Mexican army. Unfortunately, Ordaz's actions during this time overshadowed the good things he accomplished in Mexico.

During the first four years of his term, Ordaz lobbied heavily for a bid to have the 1968 Summer Olympics hosted in Mexico City. It would be the first time the Olympic Games would be hosted by a developing country, and assisted in thrusting the city into the limelight. In addition, it would be the first time a Spanish-speaking nation would host the Games, the first Games set in Latin America and only the second Games held outside Europe, Australia and the US. It was a big deal, to say the least. Even after the Tlatelolco massacre, the 1968 Summer Games was a success and President Ordaz was immortalized for this accomplishment by having a major international airport named after him.

Approximately 26 airlines frequent Ordaz International, mostly serving Canada, the US, and Mexico. The busiest routes going in and out of the airport are not surprising, as they include places like Los Angeles, Phoenix, Houston, Dallas, Denver, Seattle and Calgary, Canada. Ordaz International may not be much to look at, nor named after a very popular person, but the airport definitely has one big redeeming feature: it is the gateway to the vacation paradise of Puerto Vallarta. So ignore the tarmac and tourists, just fly in and enjoy the time spent on the long beaches and tropical beauty that is Mexico.
