You're supposed to wear something a little out there to the high-fashion Met Costume gala (Kathie Lee called them the "Oscars of the East"). But there's "out there," and then there's "Beyonce, out there."

"This was not my favorite," said Kathie Lee of Our lady of Blue Ivy's very sheer Givenchy beaded number with purple feathered trim. It was less "Love on Top" than "A Couple of Strategically Placed Sequins on Top and Nothing On The Bottom." The ladies showed the dress from a few angles, which left little to the imagination.

"You really do see the whole? Oohhhh," said Hoda, trailing off at a photo of Beyonce's posterior.

"We love Beyonce," said KLG.

Interpol to crack down on cyber crime

TEL AVIV, Israel?? Interpol said Tuesday it is making the war against cyber crime a main priority this year as online fraud crosses borders and increases in scope.

Khoo Boon Hui, president of the global police network, told a conference of 49 European member states that cyber crime is becoming more transnational. He pointed to a study published in March by the London Metropolitan University that found 80 percent of online crime is connected to cross-border organized gangs.

"Organized crime is now able to recruit members from countries without diplomatic ties to commit crimes overseas operating from temporary safe bases in third countries equipped with the latest technology," he said.

Hui said Malaysian police last month arrested more than 200 cyber criminals from China and Taiwan who operated online scams through two syndicates under the instructions of a common Taiwanese boss.

By using temporary safe bases around the far East, the online scammers netted billions of dollars via soccer and gambling websites along with credit card and bank fraud schemes, he said. He said hackers even penetrated the Interpol website this year.

Hui said cyber crime costs Europe about 750 billion euros, or more than $977 billion, a year. Israel alone deals with more than 1,000 Web attacks a minute, he said.

To help train police worldwide in online law enforcement, Hui said Interpol will open a cyber crime and digital security complex in Singapore in 2014.

This week's conference also addressed other issues including international terrorism, the drug trade, and human trafficking.

Although water is my beverage of choice, coffee comes in at a close second. Not a single morning goes by without a wake-up cup of coffee in my hand. Am I addicted? I would have to say yes! Back in those days, I didn't know that coffee was practically a health food. The merits of drinking coffee are now touted regularly in magazines and on television. In case you haven't heard, I'll reiterate.

Coffee is chock-full of antioxidants. Recent studies show that coffee may help women avoid depression. It appears that coffee consumption lowers the risk of Type II diabetes as well as some cancers, including prostate and basal cell carcinoma, the most common form of cancer. Coffee may also reduce the risk of Alzheimers disease as well as Parkinson's.? If you drink a cup of coffee immediately before a workout, coffee helps to boost your performance as well as to burn more fat during your workout. As my husband, Mr. Balancing Act said to me today, "Coffee is delicious! It smells great! It tastes great! It is the drink of the Gods." Or something along those lines. I may not have been listening that carefully. If you want to talk to a true coffee fanatic, you should give him a call.

Of course, too much coffee is not recommended and can cause problems like racing heartbeat and even irregular heartbeat. I usually stick with a cup in the morning and a cup after lunch. No need to go hog-wild. But do keep in mind that many of the benefits listed above do not apply to decaf!

Exclusive: DMX To Drop The Weigh In EP On May 15

X's EP will feature Snoop Dogg, Lil Wayne and serves as a teaser for his next LP, Undisputed.

DMX is still fighting to prove that he's a champion in hip-hop. But like any formidable fighter, before the Dog steps back into ring for his comeback LP, he has to warm up. MTV News has learned exclusively that X will do just that in the form of a free EP called The Weigh-In.

While fans will have to wait until June 26 for the Undisputed album, his 10-track EP is scheduled to drop on May 15 X . Fredwreck, Rich Kidd and Dame Grease will produce on The Weigh-In, while Snoop Dogg and Tyrese will appear as featured guests. Lil Wayne is scheduled to appear on an unspecified interlude.

It's been six years since the multiplatinum rap star dropped his last album, Year of the Dog ... Again. Propelled by the Swizz Beatz-produced "We in Here" and the gospel-drenched "Lord Give Me a Sign," Year of the Dog ... Again debuted at the #2 spot on the Billboard albums chart, proving that DMX could still be a bankable rap artist.

In recent years, though, it seems that X has been making headlines for everything but his music, with mounting legal trouble and numerous stints in and out of jail keeping him away from the studio. When DMX debuted back in May 1998 with his first LP, It's Dark and Hell is Hot, he was an immovable force. His second album, Flesh of My Flesh, Blood of My Blood, was released only months later in December of 1998 and cemented his rap legacy. X continued to release albums, but he would also collect a slew of charges over the years.

Last July, the Dog was released from an Arizona state jail after serving eight months of a one-year sentence for probation violations. DMX is currently a star in VH1's new reality series "Couples Therapy."

Started out by having a good part of the day to myself to play in the garage. Started out by putting together my new buffing machine - 1hp - 1750 and 3450 - dual canton wheels - with mezerna medium and fine compounds for use. So far so good with this new addition. It replaces my little Baldor 1/3 hp which I now use for Tripoli and WD.
Decided to try to finish a project that has been sitting around for along time in the shop - Walnut bowl - Turned and sanded and then I put it to the side because i under estimated the thickness of the bottom and thought I would go thru it when I turned off the tenon - Reverse chucked it up and took the tenon off and broke a hole in the bottom because of how thin it got. I thought about throwing it out to the firewood pile but the grain is wonderful so i chucked up a forestner bit and bored a hole in it. Now the hard part it to figure out if I want to plug it with a walnut plug and sand the plug.............or create a pedestal type thing for it....

anybody else think of anything ? I really hate to discard it

North Carolina bans gay marriage

(AP Photo/The??North Carolinians voted to change the state constitution Tuesday to say that the only valid "domestic legal partnership" in the state is marriage between a man and a woman, according to the AP's projection. The amendment passed 61 to 39 percent with most counties reporting, making North Carolina the 29th state with a gay marriage ban in its constitution.

The state already outlawed gay marriage, but the constitutional amendment makes it more difficult for politicians to ever change the law. The amendment also means that a handful of North Carolina municipalities that extended benefits to the domestic partners of their employees will no longer be able to do so, since marriage is now the only valid legal partnership in the state. Former President Bill Clinton urged the state's voters not to support the amendment in robocalls, while President Barack Obama's office said he was also against the change.

Supporters of gay marriage out-raised and out-advertised their opponents in the lead up to the vote, emphasizing in TV ads that the amendment could also have repercussions for unmarried straight couples because of its vague language. The anti-amendment coalition raised more than $2 million, according to campaign finance disclosures, most of which came from small and large individual donations. The pro-amendment crowd, called Vote for Marriage NC, raised a little more than $1 million, with most of the money being donated by nonprofit groups, not individuals.

Only 46 percent of voters realized that the amendment would ban civil unions for gay couples as well as marriage,?according to a Public Policy Polling poll.?A majority of North Carolina voters support civil unions.

Minnesota faces a ballot gay marriage ban in November, while Maine activists are hoping that residents have changed their minds and will vote to approve gay marriage this November after repealing its legalization in 2009. Lawmakers in Maryland, Washington and New Jersey passed laws legalizing same-sex marriage this year, though Gov. Chris Christie vetoed New Jersey's law.

Investing In The Future Through Interns | Dyn Blog

When you?re growing fast, it?s important to be thinking about the future and the most important part of that process is your people. The key to Dyn?s success has always been its people: finding them, growing them and growing with them.

This doesn?t apply only for full-time employees, but our interns as well. By recruiting star interns, we?ve been able to develop them into amazing talent who work here full-time.

In the five years I?ve been here, interns have played a big role in our success: a reason why we had our first ever Intern Day in March where we brought in 40 potential interns from colleges like WPI, SNHU, Northeastern, UNH Durham, UNH Manchester, Saint Anselm, Boston University and even a couple of folks up from Duke.

The day was not only an opportunity for us to get to know them but for them to see what we?re all about. Kicking it off with a pizza lunch, we introduced them to 17 project mentors so they could think about what would best suit them. It was a way for them to understand the passion we have for what we do. We had opportunities across the board from marketing, accounting, finance, engineering, IT and more. After hearing from the mentors, they were able to sign up for interviews there on the spot.

To say that we were impressed with the talent that showed up that day would be an understatement.

We were left with some difficult decisions to make ? the sign of a successful day. We weren?t alone in that assessment as we asked those who showed up to rate the experience, ?How likely are you to recommend our Intern Day to a friend?? The average response was a 9.63 out of 10, so it looks like we?ll be doing this again next year!

For this summer, we plan on having 30 interns working at our Manchester headquarters but our job isn?t over the day they show up for work. Juliane Theriault did an amazing job of getting them in the door and will be working as the Intern Coordinator this summer, hosting special events that encourage them to bond together.

We want them to feel part of Dyn as well, so they?ll be joining the rest of us during our company lunches and meetings. This ensures that they not only learn from their time here, but that we learn from them as well. There?s no telling what amazing discovery will happen when they ask,?Why do we do this like this??

One reason our interns are so important to us is that we don?t stick them in the corner doing menial work. They work with cutting-edge technology and solve real problems. We?ve had many interns take the opportunity and turn it into a full-time position. Those who haven?t? We still keep in touch with them and have a solid relationship with them all.

Dyn started in a college dorm room and as we grow, we never want to lose our roots.

We?re successful and continue to grow because our people continue to grow and be successful. Internships are not only a way to give back, but a way for us to ensure a bright future.

When flatulent dinosaurs warmed the earth

Some scientific findings are just too good to leave alone, even if you don't know if they can ever be confirmed: Such is the case for a study saying that plant-eating dinosaurs could have emitted enough digestive methane to warm Earth's climate 150 million years ago.

"It is known that the time of these dinosaurs was warmer than now," said David Wilkinson, an environmental scientist at Liverpool John Moores University who's the lead author of a paper on the subject appearing in the journal Current Biology. "This is explained usually by an enhanced greenhouse effect, mainly carbon dioxide. If we are correct, then methane from sauropods may have been a contributor to this greenhouse effect."

Methane is a more potent greenhouse gas than carbon dioxide, and modern-day livestock are thought to be responsible for about a quarter of the methane released in the United States. Some say that the belches and flatulence of cattle, pigs and sheep are a significant contributor to the warming effect caused by greenhouse-gas emissions. So why wouldn't it have been the same in the age of giant plant-eating dinosaurs, when global biomass density was at least several times what it is today?

"All vertebrates that feed on leaves, etc., use microbes to help digest these, and usually give off methane," Wilkinson told me in an email. "This includes both mammals and reptiles. ... Although details vary within groups, everything around today does this, so the assumption is [that] larger herbivorous dinosaurs did as well."

He and his colleagues ran the numbers, using what they saw as conservative estimates for the total amount of dinosaur biomass and methane production rates per kilogram of body mass. They came up with a figure of 520 million tons of methane emitted per year, which is more than total modern-day methane emissions from all sources, natural and industrial. The current estimate for total methane emission is around 500 million tons a year, with 50 to 100 milllion tons of that coming from ruminant animals such as cows and goats, Wilkinson said.

"Our work certainly suggests biology and climate were involved in a feedback loop," he said.

Biologists have found that most of the modern-day methane emissions from livestock come from belching rather than flatulence. Was it the same for dinosaurs? "We have no particular view which end of the sauropod the methane came out," Wilkinson told me. "Could be either or both."

Chemical analysis of ancient marine sediments has found that greenhouse-gas levels went through a huge rise 201 million years ago, around the time of a mass extinction that set the stage for the rise of the dinosaurs. Scientists suspect that the atmospheric methane levels at that time were pumped up by a massive release of methane from the seafloor.?Such evidence suggests that plant-eating dinosaurs weren't responsible for starting the upswing in Mesozoic methane. But did they help preserve the methane-rich atmosphere and toasty temperatures until they were killed off by an asteroid strike?

Wilkinson noted that his paper was titled "Could Methane Produced by Sauropod Dinosaurs Have Helped Drive Mesozoic Climate Warmth?" ??not "Did Methane Produced by Dinosaurs Help Drive Climate Warmth."

"What our simple calculations show is that, yes, it could. It's a real possibility. But we don't show that it did happen," he said. "That would require much more work, and indeed it may be impossible to completely prove this without a time machine."

Extra credit: A dozen years ago, the BBC quoted a Chinese news report that quoted an unnamed French scientist as saying the dinosaurs were wiped out 65 million years ago not by an asteroid, but by their own flatulence. This hypothesis proposed that the methane emissions from the giant beasts became so great that the climate changed, the vegetation withered and the dinosaurs all starved. But that's just too silly to consider. Or is it?

CAIRO (AP) ? Egypt's Islamist-dominated parliament on Sunday approved a ban on the country's next president from sending civilians for trial by military tribunals, but preserving that power for the military itself.

The measure would curb the powers enjoyed by the deposed President Hosni Mubarak, who used the military tribunals to refer opponents, especially Islamists.

The law retains the current wide-ranging powers for the military to send civilians to military tribunals. Activists have been campaigning against that practice by the ruling generals who took over from Mubarak in February last year.

More than 10,000 civilians have been referred to such tribunals since then, some for criticizing the military.

On Saturday alone, more than 300 civilians were sent for military prosecution following violent demonstrations near the Defense Ministry in Cairo. They face accusations of attacking troops and disrupting public order.

Late Sunday, the military renewed an overnight curfew in the area of the ministry for a third day.

Human Rights Watch researcher Heba Morayef said the new measure fails to protect civilians and civilian justice system from the military.

"It is an attempt to limit the next president's power, but does nothing about the relations between civilians and military," she said. "The newly elected civilian authority is not responding to one of the main demands on the streets to protect the rights of civilians."

Another lawyer, Ragia Omran, who has been campaigning for ending the military trials, said the measure was a "disappointment," because there were consultations with lawmakers to limit the military's jurisdiction.

"The (lawmakers) don't care about the public opinion. It is only good for them," she said.

The measure allows those tried under Mubarak to appeal the verdicts before a military tribunal. This includes some of the senior Muslim Brotherhood leaders.

Brotherhood lawyer Abdel-Moneim Abdel-Maksoud said the law intends to "curb the powers of the next president" to send civilians to military courts for a wide variety of offenses.

The military itself still has that authority, he said, "but now the door is no longer open for the next president" to do so.

Egyptian activists and political groups have grown critical of the military management of the transition period, and have sought to curb the powers enjoyed by the military since its 1952 military coup. Since then it was been the source of all of Egypt's leaders.

Later this month, Egyptians vote for the first time to elect a president without a military background. But many believe the military is still trying to preserve its economic interests and political clout by backing a presidential candidate or introducing legislation that protects its status.

Morayef questioned the Brotherhood's concession on military trials despite public pressure.

"The timing is interesting, when the Brotherhood is saying it is in the middle of a battle with the military, (but) in no way are they pushing back against military authority," she said.

The original law, in place since 1966, allows the military to try any crimes committed against military personnel, on military grounds or "against the security, safety or interests of the Armed Forces."

The tribunals also have jurisdiction over any site operated by the military. Egypt's military has extensive economic interests and employs civilians, making them liable to military jurisdiction.

Rights lawyer Ahmed Ragheb said the new measure also preserves the right of the military to try its retired personnel for financial and other crimes, a measure adopted after the uprising that toppled Mubarak.

Secret Service agents were 'brutes,' prostitute says

The prostitute at the center of the Secret Service sex scandal speaks in her first American television interview, calling the agents "stupid brutes" and saying she's "not to blame for being attractive." NBC's Michelle Kosinski reports.

Updated at 8:16 a.m. ET: MADRID, Spain -- A woman identifying herself as the Colombian prostitute at the center of a scandal involving U.S. Secret Service personnel has called the group of agents "stupid brutes" who put partying above President Barack Obama's security.?

"These seem like completely stupid, idiotic people," Dania Londono Suarez said in an interview?which aired on?Monday's TODAY.?"I don't know how Obama had them in his security force."

She also?accused the agents of "leaving their duty behind" and described them as "stupid brutes."

The scandal broke in April when, in advance of Obama's arrival at the Summit of the Americas in Cartagena, Colombia, agents allegedly brought prostitutes to their hotel rooms. ?One of the men, Suarez told NBC News, refused to pay her for sex so she went to the police.

So far, eight agents have lost their jobs as a result of the incident.

Suarez, 24,?said three men who approached and propositioned her and her friends were drinking vodka like it was water.

"They liked to show off their bodies, great bodies, well-defined abs,"?Saurez said of the men she first met at a nightclub. "They liked attention."?

NBC's Kristen Welker talks about the interview given by the woman in the middle of scandal, in which she alleges she did not know the men were Secret Service agents.

The mother of a nine-year-old son?said?she made it perfectly clear to one that a night with her would cost $800.

"And he accepted. And it was clear," she said.?

But in the morning after they had had sex, the man gave her only $50 and ordered her out of the room, Suarez said.?

"I am not to blame for being attractive," she told TODAY. "They are to blame -- for leaving their duty behind."

Israeli Supreme Court questions demolition delay

JERUSALEM (AP) ? The Israeli Supreme Court has reacted coolly to a government request to delay the demolition of an illegal West Bank settler outpost.

The state agreed to raze the five buildings by May 1 after it acknowledged they were built on private Palestinian land. But it put off the deadline by asking the court to reopen the case.

The government is under pressure from settlers who insist the construction was legal. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's governing coalition is sympathetic to the settlers.

Justices sounded impatient with the government at Sunday's one-day court hearing. Justice Uzi Fogelman said, "When the state makes a commitment, we do not even contemplate that the commitment will not be honored."

The court did not say when it would rule on the request.

Israeli media: Early election canceled

JERUSALEM (AP) ? In a surprise move that could influence a possible Israeli strike on Iran, Israeli media reports early Tuesday indicate that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has reached an agreement with the Kadima opposition party for a unity government, canceling an early election.

There was no immediate comment from official sources on the decision that was reported at about 2 a.m.

The reports came as Israel's parliament held debates long into the night over whether to disperse ahead of early elections called for the fall. Knesset spokesman Yotam Yakir said no final vote was taken and parliament is not dispersing.

Earlier in the day, the Israeli government proposed that the election be moved up to Sept. 4.

The election had originally been set for 2013.

According to the media reports, Netanyahu forged an agreement with opposition leader Shaul Mofaz of Kadima shortly before parliament was set to vote to disperse.

The appointment of Mofaz, a former military chief and defense minister, is significant in Israel's standoff with Iran as he has been vocal critic of Israel striking Iran's nuclear sites on its own.

The call for early elections had renewed speculation that Israel might attack Iran's suspect nuclear program, perhaps within months.

Israel, like the West, thinks Iran is developing nuclear weapons, a charge Tehran denies. But it has repeatedly hinted it might strike Iran if it concludes that U.S.-led diplomacy and sanctions have failed.

Netanyahu has hinted at the possibility of an Israeli military strike on Iran's nuclear facilities but have not made an open threat.

Israel considers Iran a threat to its existence because of its nuclear and missile development programs, frequent reference to Israel's destruction by Iranian leaders and Iran's support of violent anti-Israeli groups in Lebanon and Gaza.

The reports said Kadima agreed to join Netanyahu's government on condition it supports a proposal about a military deferment for ultra-Orthodox Jews. The issue was one of the main reasons Netanyahu decided to bring forward the election date. The deal stipulates that Mofaz will serve as deputy prime minister and that two other key parties, Yisrael Beitenu and Shas, had agreed to the move, according to reports.

The current government is the most stable Israel has had in years. But disagreements on a variety of domestic issues such as drafting the ultra-Orthodox into the military and tearing down illegal structures in West Bank settlements have led Netanyahu to move up elections by more than a year.

Recent polls have suggested Netanyahu's Likud Party would win at least one-quarter of parliament's 120 seats to become the legislature's largest faction ? putting him in a comfortable position to form a majority coalition.

They also show he might be able to form a more moderate coalition than the hawkish lineup he now heads, in partnership with centrist parties more open to making concession to the Palestinians.

The early elections have also renewed speculation that Israel might attack Iran's suspect nuclear program, perhaps within months.

Orangutans host ancient jumping genes

ScienceDaily (May 7, 2012) ? LSU's Mark Batzer, along with research associate Jerilyn Walker and assistant professor Miriam Konkel, have published research determining that modern-day orangutans are host to ancient jumping genes called Alu, which are more than 16 million years old. The study was done in collaboration with the Zoological Society of San Diego and the Institute of Systems Biology in Seattle and is featured in the new open access journal Mobile DNA.

These tiny pieces of mobile DNA are able to copy themselves using a method similar to retroviruses. They can be thought of as molecular fossils, as a shared Alu element sequence and location within the genome indicates a common ancestor. But, because this is an inexact process, a segment of "host" DNA is duplicated at the Alu insertion sites and these footprints, known as target site duplications, can be used to identify Alu insertions.

"However, it has long been recognized that only a small fraction of these elements retain the ability to mobilize new copies as 'drivers,' while most are inactive," said Batzer, Boyd Professor and Dr. Mary Lou Applewhite Distinguished Professor of Biological Sciences. "In humans, telling the difference has proven quite difficult, mainly because the human genome is filled with plenty of relatively young Alu insertions, all with slight differences while at the same time lacking easily identifiable features characteristic for Alu propagation. This makes it hard to find their 'parent' or 'source Alu' from potentially hundreds of candidates that look similar."

In contrast to humans and other studied primates, recent activity of Alu elements in the orangutan has been very slow, with only a handful of recent events by comparison. This itself is very unique and was a highlighted feature of the Batzer Lab's previous Nature publication focusing on the Orangutan Genome.

"In the current study, we were able to discover the likely source Alu, or founder, of some of the very recent Alu insertions unique to the orangutan. This is significant for many reasons," said Walker. "First, this study represents only the second study that identified a driver Alu element. In addition, this driver is more than 16 million years old!"

Analysis of DNA sequences has found over a million Alu elements within each primate genome, many of which are species specific: 5,000 are unique to humans, while 2,300 others are exclusive to chimpanzees. In contrast, the orangutan lineage (Sumatran and Bornean orangutans) only has 250 specific Alu. Even though the Alu discovered in this study is old enough to be shared in human, chimpanzee, gorilla and orangutan genomes, its primary "jumping" has been in orangutans.

"Furthermore, this ancient 'backseat driver' created several daughter elements over the course of several millions years and a relatively young daughter element (found only in Sumatran orangutans and absent from Bornean orangutans) also appears to mobilize and has created offspring Alu copies of itself," said Konkel. This is promising new evidence that Alu propagation may be 'waking up' in orangutans.

The identification of an Alu element with the ability to mobilize itself contributes to the understanding of the evolution of Alu elements and their impact on primate genomes. Moreover, the features of this Alu element can be used to search for other source elements in different species including humans, which could lead to advances in our understanding of just how dynamic our genome really is.

Having begun to look at the over arching benefits that video conferencing can offer to business and why these will propel it to greater success in 2012, the second part of this article will consider how the technology is likely to develop in the year ahead.

Video Conferencing as Part of Unified Communications

Where video conferencing is likely to make its biggest impact in 2012 is as an integrated component of unified communications strategies. As such, the potential of the technology can be fully realised because unified communications offers the flexibility to combine video conferencing with other communication channels such as emails, instant messaging and collaborative file sharing. Collaborators can therefore easily switch between channels as the situation demands, for example, working together on documentation whilst taking part in video conference meetings.

Unified communications as a whole is forecast to grow at a rate of 18% a year until 2015 according to research by IDC, leading to a market worth $44bn in comparison with the $19bn market seen in 2010, and video conferencing should play a significant role in this success.

Who Will Be Using It?

With the aforementioned benefits and the demands of the current financial climate, many businesses both large and small will be turning to video conferencing as a communications strategy.

Research by Ovum anticipates that there will be a 20% increase in large scale deployments by 2016, suggesting the technology will be adopted by big business organisations in 2012. With the public spending cuts in the UK particularly, Video Conferencing is likely to make an impact in the public sector organisations who are trying to operate within smaller budgets. However, as a scale-able technology it will also remain popular with smaller nimble organisations too who may be less dependent on static office locations and are perhaps unlikely to have the budgets that easily afford long distance travel.

Furthermore, there is a growing market in firms that offer centralised conference locations, such as hotels, providing video conferencing facilities which companies can hire as when the need arises. Although this may still require an element of travel to a nearby facility it can still cut longer distance travel costs whilst not requiring the initial outlay of installing facilities on site.

The technology is also set to continue its growth as a personal communication tool and it is this market which may ultimately end up driving the technology's uptake in the business sector as employees, who are familiar with it from their personal lives, look to how it benefit them in their work lives too.

Advances in Tech

The biggest challenge facing video conferencing in 2012, and most likely the reason behind its anticipated jump in adoption rates in the near future, is that of interoperability. Currently many installations use proprietary protocols and are not cross compatible with other installations. In other words a business may implement video conferencing facilities on two of their sites which can communicate effectively with each other but are then unable to link up with those of their clients, for example, who have employed a different provider and configuration. This has been a historical stumbling block since the technology began to take hold but companies are now beginning to look more seriously at how this can be overcome.

One factor in improving interoperability could well be the move from hardware reliant solutions to more software based ones. Traditionally, video conferencing installations in businesses have tended to involve static conference rooms with the hardware required to conduct meetings over video streams in situ. However, it is believed that the longer term trend is to move first to software based solutions and then ultimately the cloud, which as well as being far cheaper and scale-able than static conference rooms, also allows attendees to join a single meeting from a variety of devices - from their own PCs, laptops, tablets and smartphones for example - and therefore from any location, be it their desks or on the move.

A key to this trend, in turn, is the growth in mobile video conferencing with the popularity of services such as Apple's FaceTime. Indeed, 2012 is set to see the first smartphones released with 1080p video capability for video chat and mobile video calls are only going to become more prevalent as they become more accessible and of a higher quality.

In fact the trends in personal tech are, in broader terms likely to be fundamental to advances in the workplace. High tech devices are now widespread and staff in their personal lives are becoming more and more tech-savvy, particularly around mobile technologies. The solutions they see and use in their home lives can often be applied to improve their business communications and workers are now more likely to understand this potential and recommend solutions themselves.

Furthermore, many workers are looking to utilise their own technology and their own devices in the work place as they often exceed the devices that are made available to them by their employer. This 'hot' trend of bring your own device (BYOD) will only further drive advances in cross compatible software based solutions that overcome the hurdles of interoperability mentioned above.

2012 therefore is likely to be a year in which video conferencing really takes a significant step forward as it demonstrates its worth in every area of society, from its familiar business territory to education, public services and social networking. And the more popular it becomes, the greater its flexibility and potential.
