Exercise and sex lowers your risk for heart attack | Bodybuilding ...



A new study done by Boston researchers discovered that sudden bursts of physical activity, such as sex, for an otherwise sedentary person increases the individual?s risk for a heart attack and sudden cardiac death by three-fold, or more.

Not Enough Sex, Physical Activity

The study, published in the Journal of the American Medical Association, looked at 14 different cases of heart attack or sudden cardiac death in people who were ?unaccustomed? to regular exercise. They found that with sex there is a 2.7 higher chance of heart attack and with any other type of sporadic physical activity there is a 5 fold increased risk.

Although including sex made the study more interesting (or perhaps even newsworthy), this actually isn?t new news. It is a well established fact in the medical community that occasional and sudden stress on the body, including sex, physical activity, emotional outburst or illness, for those who do not regularly participate in physical activity can cause the heart to stop functioning.

Heart Attack vs. Sudden Cardiac Death

Although often talked about synonymously, a heart attack and sudden cardiac death are actually two different things. A heart attack is a condition in which the blood flow to the arteries supplying the heart are blocked. This is typically due to the buildup of plaque (cholesterol) inside the walls of the arteries or by a blood clot that forms as a result of damage to the plaque buildup. If the blood flow is not restored quickly, the heart muscle begins to die.

Sudden cardiac death, on the other hand is death resulting from a sudden loss of heart function caused by a disruption or cessation in the electrical impulses which control the heart beat. Typically, death occurs within minutes of the onset of symptoms and the person may or may not have been aware of underlying cardiac disease. However, autopsies have found that over 90 percent of people who suffer sudden cardiac death have significant fatty plaque buildup at least 2 major arteries which feed the heart.

Preventing Cardiac Events With Exercise

People who engage in regular physical activity (or sex) are essentially making their hearts accustomed to sudden stress. Therefore, unexpected or occasional outbursts do not cause major disruption in the functioning of the heart. Furthermore, physical activity also helps lower cholesterol levels which prevents fatty buildup in your arteries as well as promotes the sending of scavengers to help remove buildup that has already formed.

Want to lower your risk for sudden death? The solution is simple: more exercise, more sex. It is recommended that people engage in moderate physical activity for at least 30 minutes per day in order to decease your the for cardiovascular disease. If you are someone who hasn?t worked out in a while it is best to start slowly and work your way up to moderate and intense levels of exercise so that you heart can adjust.
